Africa Day at Mutare First Steps Schools is heritage learning in public. Children wear traditional dress, work with baskets, grain and clay, and stand in front of a map of the continent they are learning to know from the inside.
It is one of the ways the Heritage-Based Curriculum leaves the page: identity, culture and practical skill in the same afternoon.
On Career Day, learners try on professions. Some stand in pilot uniform with a model aircraft. Others pull on fire kit and learn what the tools are for. The point is not costume. It is a first, concrete meeting with work.
Career exposure is how the school helps children notice their interests early, while aspiration is still wide open.
Rackets, white lines and a bright Mutare sky. Sport gives learners a place to cooperate, compete fairly and stay with a skill long enough to improve.
Learner leadership at the school includes participation in presidential elections and visits that show children how public life works. They practise being represented, and representing others.
